Is Snoring or Mouth Breathing “Just a Habit”? Probably Not.

Feeding & Myofunctional Therapy in Lexington & Georgetown, KY - Featured

Ever notice your kid sleeping with their mouth wide open, or catch yourself waking up with a dry mouth and a headache? It’s tempting to shrug it off by saying “some people just breathe through their mouth,” but honestly, that’s not really how we’re built to work. Your nose is designed to be your main airway. When someone breathes through their mouth instead, night after night, it’s usually because something’s making nose breathing harder: a stuffy nose, a tongue that isn’t sitting where it should, or an airway that’s more crowded than it should be.

Here’s the part most people don’t realize: this isn’t just about a stuffy night or a bit of noise. Mouth breathing over months and years can actually change how a face grows, especially in kids. When the tongue doesn’t rest up against the roof of the mouth the way it’s supposed to, the palate doesn’t widen properly, teeth get crowded, and the whole face can grow longer and narrower than it would otherwise. In adults, ongoing snoring and mouth breathing often go hand in hand with poor sleep, morning fatigue, and sometimes something more serious, like sleep apnea, that’s worth getting checked out.

The good news? This is exactly what myofunctional therapy is built for. Instead of just telling you to “close your mouth,” we work on retraining the muscles of the tongue, lips, and cheeks so that nose breathing and good tongue posture become automatic again, not something you have to think about. Over time, that can mean less snoring, better sleep, and for kids, a real shot at healthier facial and jaw development.

If snoring or an open mouth has just become “normal” in your house, it’s worth a second look. A proper evaluation can figure out what’s actually driving it and whether therapy (sometimes alongside your ENT, dentist, or a sleep doctor) can help turn things around.
